Walsh University picks up a commitment from the top unsigned guard in Northeast Ohio. Darryl Straughter, a senior at Canton McKinley, gave the Cavs a pledge following their game Thursday night against Findlay.

Height: 5'9

Weight: 160lbs

Position: Point Guard

High School: McKinley (Canton, Ohio)

AAU:  Air Attack - Knox

Straughter was the top target for Coach Jeff Young and company and the staff made sure that keeping Stark County's top guard close to home was a priority.

At 5'9, Straughter has made the transition from being a reliable catch and shoot option to a three level scorer as a senior, becoming one of McKinley's all-time leaders in total points scored.

Known for his smooth stroke and deep range on his jumper, Straughter is a proven finisher in transition and possesses both the body control and athleticism to draw and finish despite his size.

His no-step vertical leap of 30.1" was the second highest among point-guard prospects at the NEO Spotlight Super 60 Combine back in September.

How does he fit?

Both Walsh senior Zac Carter and Straughter stand at 5'9 and it isn't difficult to find some parallels in their style of play. Carter, now 10th on Walsh's all-time scoring list, has had a career with the Cavaliers worth emulating.

Carter scored 25 points on Thursday with Straughter looking on and his late triple in overtime knotted things up before a Findlay buzzer beater.

With Carter and senior forward Trey Fletcher set to graduate, there will be opportunity for Straughter to step in and see the floor early on it what appears to be an ideal fit for both parties.

What's Next?

McKinley (13-8) travels this Friday on the road to play St. Vincent-St. Mary in a postseason tuneup. Straughter and the Pups enter a loaded Division One Canton District as the 6 seed and play the winner of Barberton/Copley on March 4th.
