Kaleb Martin is Holding His Own

Kaleb Martin tallied 20 points and 5 assists Tuesday night in a win over Tallmadge.

Despite sitting a number of minutes as a result of early foul trouble, 2019 guard Kaleb Martin scored a game-high 20 points in Green's victory over Tallmadge on Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs (8-9) have taken their fair share of lumps competing in the Federal League this season but they have managed to be successful throughout their non-conference schedule, picking up wins over old Suburban League rivals in Barberton and Tallmadge.

Both Martin and the rest of his teammates joined the Federal League during the 2015-2016 season and it has been quite the transition so far.

"The Federal League is one of the best leagues in Ohio. My freshman year was a learning experience", Martin said Tuesday night.

This maturation process has resulted in a breakout sophomore campaign from Martin, who has quickly transitioned into one of the area's top underclassmen guards.

At 5'9, Martin is an undersized guard who has a yo-yo like handle on the ball, splitting defenders out of pick and roll situations to create quick opportunities for himself at the rim.

"This summer I was just working with my dad doing workouts after workouts. We worked a lot on finishing and dribbling."

Green Coach Mark Kinsley has been on record noting his point-guard's innate ability to draw contact when attacking the bucket and earning trips to the charity strip. During a tough stretch earlier this season against some of the league's best, Martin was averaging double digit attempts at the line.

"I'm not real big so I have to work on my strength and just keep getting better."

Martin's jumpshot has continued to improve and as he adds consistency to his shooting stroke, it will open up even more opportunities for him to be aggressive in the halfcourt.

Being thrown into the fire of what is the Federal League has allowed Coach Kinsley and company an opportunity to grow together as a whole. Zachary Ganzer and sharpshooter Bobby Staudt are the lone seniors on a team that features a slew of young pieces that will have another crack at the league title next season.

"We started out slow in the beginning of the season but in the second half, we have picked it up and it' seen great ever since," Martin responded when asked about the team's play moving into the postseason.

Before the Bulldogs get to maneuver their way through a loaded Division One Canton district, they hope they can build some momentum and rattle off some wins in what is a tough five-game stretch to close the year.

Three of the five teams are ranked in the latest NEO Spotlight poll.
