Massillon Jackson Regains the Top Spot | Updated Top 25 Poll

Things have somewhat returned to normal here in Northeast Ohio after what was undoubtedly the strangest week of the season thus far. 

Teams have finalized their rotations and have firmly established roles while simultaneously making adjustments in strategy to help prepare themselves for round two of league play. 

Lake was able to knock off Hoover for the second time this season and as a result, they helped catapult a league rival back to the top of the rankings. Keep reading to see where the chips fell in the latest NEO Spotlight Top 25 rankings!

1. Massillon Jackson
  • Record: 12-1
  • Last Week: Defeated GlenOak, 79-54. Defeated #16 Mentor, 85-48.
  • This Week: 1/24 vs. Massillon Perry, 1/27 vs. #24 McKinley
  • Outlook: After spending a week at number three, the Polar Bears have regained their position atop of the poll and they looked every bit of number one their matchup with Mentor, who was ranked in the top 10 at the time. 
2. North Canton Hoover 
  • Record: 11-2
  • Last Week: Defeated GlenOak, 73-52. Lost @ #15 Uniontown Lake, 52-48. 
  • This Week: 1/27 vs. Massillon Perry
  • Outlook: Lake appears to have Hoover's number this season and the Blue Streaks have given them their only two losses of the season. There are no nights off in the Federal League and the team hosts a scrappy Perry team that is coming off of a momentum changing win against McKinley.
3. St. Ignatius 
  • Record: 9-4
  • Last Week: Defeated #21 Cleveland Central Catholic, 75-63
  • This Week: 1/26 @ Lutheran East, 1/28 vs. John Marshall
  • Outlook: After being knotted up after the first quarter, the Wildcats were able to pull away from CC en route to a double digit win. They will travel to Lutheran East on Thursday to play in a tough road environment. 
4. St. Vincent-St. Mary 
  • Record: 9-4
  • Last Week: Defeated #25 Ellet, 74-54. Defeated Shaker Heights, 59-47.
  • This Week: 1/24 @ Warrensville Heights, 1/27 vs. Buchtel, 1/28 @ Walnut Ridge 
  • Outlook: The Fighting Irish appear to have completely recovered from last weekend's matchup with Trotwood Madison. Graves and Williams have been handling most of the scoring duties but players such as junior Scott Walter have shown flashes as of late. 
5. St. Edward 
  • Record: 9-4
  • Last Week: Defeated #6 Lorain, 76-63. Lost vs. Toledo St. John, 57-43.
  • This Week: 1/28 vs. #19 VASJ
  • Outlook: Toledo St. John, the top team in Northwest Ohio, had control throughout the game and held on to knock off St. Ed's and spoil their chances at a top 3 ranking. The team has  few days off before hosting VASJ. 
6. Lorain
  • Record: 10-2
  • Last Week: Lost vs. #5 St. Edward, 76-63. Defeated Bedford, 83-39. Defeated Clearview, 90-70. 
  • This Week: 1/24 vs. #13 Medina, 1/27 @ #7 Cleveland Heights
  • Outlook: Lorain began to pickup some steam after Tuesday's loss to St. Eds as they knocked off Clearview without ther leading scorer and rebounder in Naz Bohanon. They host Medina this week before traveling to Heights to play a game that will could give them a clear advantage in the LEL. 
7. Cleveland Heights 
  • Record: 9-4
  • Last Week: Defeated Warrensville Heights, 74-50. Defeated Lutheran East, 55-44. 
  • This Week: 1/24 @ Euclid, 1/27 vs. #6 Lorain, 1/28 vs. Huber Heights Wayne (PBP Classic)
  • Outlook: Another tough stretch of games awaits Heights this week as they follow up a long awaited Lorain  game with an even longer bus ride down to Wilmington to face a Division 1 powerhouse in Wayne.
8. Garfield Heights
  • Record: 11-3
  • Last Week: Defeated Akron Garfield, 87-53. Defeated New Day Academy, 82-54.
  • This Week: 1/24 vs. #10 Cornerstone Christian
  • Outlook: The Bulldogs are looking for their first top 10 win of the season as they host the reigning Division 4 state champs in Cornerstone Christian. The sharpshooting duo of Jackson and Christian is capable of keeping Coach Sonny Johnson's team in any game this season. 
9. Benedictine 
  • Record: 11-2
  • Last Week: Defeated Toledo Scott (Toledo Classic), 74-49. Defeated Lake Catholic, 73-55. Defeated Revere, 79-60.
  • This Week: 1/24 @ Walsh Jesuit, 1/27 @ #11 Archbishop Hoban
  • Outlook: If they weren't before, the Bengals are looking like a serious threat in Division 2. Their speed and depth in the backcourt is unmatched by the majority of the teams they will play for the remainder of the season. 
10. Cornerstone Christian 
  • Record: 12-3
  • Last Week: Defeated Revere, 68-63. Defeated NDCL, 78-47.
  • This Week: 1/24 @ #8 Garfield Heights, 1/28 vs. Lincoln West
  • Outlook: As we head into the final week of January, Cornerstone is looking to build some momentum in order to roll into postseason action. It all begins on Tuesday with the Garfield Heights Bulldogs. The matchup offers a must see matchup in the backcourt.
11. Archbishop Hoban
  • Record: 11-1
  • Last Week: Defeated Western Reserve Academy, 44-33.
  • This Week: 1/24 vs. NDCL, 1/27 vs. #9 Benedictine
  • Outlook: The Knights' streak is up to 11 now and they have an anticipated rematch with Benedictine on Friday. Hoban walked away with a two point edge in the beginning of the season.
12. Holy Name
  • Record: 13-1
  • Last Week: Defeated Bay, 83-65.
  • This Week: 1/27 @ Elyria Catholic
  • Outlook: Dwayne Cohill racked up a career-high 47 points in Holy Name's win against Bay and don't look now, but the Green Wave are rolling. 
13. Medina
  • Record: 12-2
  • Last Week: Defeated Highland, 93-83. Defeated #23 Solon, 78-76.
  • This Week: 1/24 @ #6 Lorain, 1/27 vs. Strongsville
  • Outlook: The Bees dropped two games last week but responded this go around with two quality wins. They face perhaps their toughest test yet as they travel to Lorain on Tuesday. 
14. Maple Heights
  • Record: 10-2
  • Last Week: Defeated Shaw, 76-67.
  • This Week: 1/24 vs. Willoughby South, 1/27 @ Bedford
  • Outlook: Maple is simply just winning games. Their tough, uptempo brand of basketball has been their key to success thus far and they have shown hardly any signs of slowing down. 
15. Uniontown Lake 
  • Record: 10-4
  • Last Week: Defeated Green, 67-50. Defeated #2 Hoover, 52-48.
  • This Week: 1/24 @ GlenOak, 1/28 @ Canfield
  • Outlook: The Blue Streaks are 6-2 in the Federal League after knocking off Hoover for the second time this season. With four league contests remaining, Lake has a shot to grab at least a share of the conference crown.
16. Mentor 
  • Record: 9-3
  • Last Week: Defeated Eastlake North, 107-51. Lost vs. #22 Brunswick, 61-48. Lost vs. #1 Jackson, 85-48.
  • This Week: 1/27 @ Euclid
  • Outlook: The shots just aren't falling for Mentor right now after a hot start through their first 10 games. They score just three points in the fourth quarter against Brunswick in a tough loss. 
17. Copley  
  • Record: 12-0
  • Last Week: Defeated Stow, 69-59. Defeated Westlake, 77-52.
  • This Week: 1/24 @ Twinsburg, 1/27 vs. Barberton
  • Outlook: The Indians are riding a 35-game regular season winning streak as they prepare for the second cycle of conference play in the Suburban League. 
18. Elyria 
  • Record: 11-2
  • Last Week: Defeated Keystone, 59-40. Defeated Euclid, 75-58.
  • This Week: 1/24 vs. Bay, 1/27 @ #22 Brunswick
  • Outlook: A rematch with Brunswick is lurking in the shadows for the Pioneers but first, they will have to overcome the offensive firepower of Bay.
19. Villa Angela-St. Joseph
  • Record: 7-4
  • Last Week: Defeated Valley Christian, 78-51. Defeated Trinity, 91-53.
  • This Week: 1/24 vs. St. Thomas Aquinas, 1/27 @ #21 Cleveland Central Catholic, 1/28 @ #5 St. Edward
  • Outlook: The out-of-state gauntlet is over for VASJ but they won't get much of a break this week with a pair of league rivals and a top five team on the menu. 
20. Wooster 
  • Record: 13-0
  • Last Week: Defeated West Holmes, 85-64. Defeated Mt. Vernon, 66-35.
  • This Week: 1/24 vs. Madison Comprehensive, 1/27 @ Mansfield Senior
  • Outlook: Wooster has continued to roll this season and have even garnered some attention in the state's AP poll.
21. Cleveland Central Catholic 
  • Record: 7-5
  • Last Week: Defeated St. Thomas Aquinas, 67-60. Lost vs. #4 St. Ignatius, 75-63. 
  • This Week: 1/24 @ Valley Christian, 1/27 vs. #19 VASJ
  • Outlook: CCC is still looking for their first signature win this season since being back at full strength, and they will have another shot on Friday against the Vikings of VASJ.
22. Brunswick 
  • Record: 11-5
  • Last Week: Defeated #16 Mentor, 61-48. 
  • This Week: 1/27 vs. #18 Elyria
  • Outlook: Coach Mackey and company find themselves back in the Top 25 after yet another impressive victory on the road.
23. Solon 
  • Record: 10-4
  • Last Week: Defeated University, 96-57. Lost vs. #13 Medina, 78-76.
  • This Week: 1/24 @ Mayfield, 1/27 @ Shaker Heights
  • Outlook: Sincere Carry's last second three hit back iron in the Comets loss to Medina but there is still plenty of time for Solon to shake things up in the GCC. 
24. Canton McKinley 
  • Record: 10-5
  • Last Week: Lost vs. Massillon Perry, 72-66. Lost vs. Massillon Washington, 67-60.
  • This Week: 1/24 vs. Green, 1/27 @ #1 Massillon Jackson
  • Outlook: It's soul searching time for the Bulldogs as they try to bounce back from a three-game skid. 
25. Ellet
  • Record: 10-3
  • Last Week: Defeated Akron North, 84-49. Lost vs. #4 St. Vincent-St. Mary, 74-54. Defeated Whitehall-Yearling, 48-45. 
  • This Week: 1/24 vs. Akron Garfield, 1/27 @ Akron Kenmore
  • Outlook: Losing A.J. Gareri (sprained ankle) for some time will make things difficult for the Orangemen but Saturday's win against Whitehall is a good start.
