Mercy Medical Center Classic

The Mercy Medical Classic has been a staple in Stark County area for 13 seasons and the 2017 classic did not disappoint. NEO Spotlight took in Sunday's games and was thoroughly impressed with the event. From the staff to the facilities and organization, this was a great day of basketball.

Game of the Day

This game was billed as the matchup of the weekend and it did not disappoint. Seen on Twitter as the “Showdown”, the game ended up being that and a little more.

Halftime would see Holy Name holding onto a slim three point lead as Dwayne Cohill scored 11 first half points and Robby Carmody 12 points. That three point lead wouldn’t hold for long as Carmody took over for the Fighting Planets.

The sensational junior, would go on to score 11 of Mars’ 14 third quarter points and finished with 24 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Mars, as a group, would hold the Green Wave to just three points in the quarter, outscoring Holy Name 14-3.

Ben Lewis of the Fighting Planets was on fire from beyond the arc all night. Lewis would hit timely three after timely three, never allowing Holy Name any comfort, he would end up as the third leading scorer finishing with 21 points, hitting 7 threes.

Malique Burton, Holy Names giant man in the middle would end up finishing with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Burton is getting better and better every game. The 6’9 senior is becoming more patient, making efficient decisions and finishing around the rim with an array of moves.

The 4th quarter would belong to Dwayne Cohill.

As if he told Carmody, “Ok Robby, my turn”, Cohill would end up scoring 14 of Holy Names 17 fourth quarter points and finished with a game high 25 points and 10 rebounds.

A big swing in the momentum happened with three minutes to play in the game. Carmody beat Cohill off the dribble to hit a pull up jumper and Cohll, his AAU teammate in the summer, immediately answered with a pull up three as he was knocked to the ground. The gym would erupt as the ball found its way through the bottom of the net with a chance at a four-point play.

Mars would run the clock down with the final possession but their desperation three would fall short.  Both Cohill and Carmody were named game MVP and finished with 25 points 10 rebounds and 24 points 9 rebounds respectively.
