Why Jump?

This is a question that fans ask when a player is on the wrong end of a momentum changing dunk. In Northeast Ohio, there are a handful of athletes who defenders should avoid jumping with when they have full head of steam. Here are the top in-game dunkers in NEO!

Be sure you vote on our poll and let us know if we got it right! You may vote once per day.

Antonio McQueen (Warren JFK) Class of 2017

Honorable Mention (Alphabetical)

Dwayne Cohill (Holy Name '18) 6'3

Jarad Dunn (Mogadore '17) 6'3

Jermaine Johnson (Garfield Heights '17) 6'6

Mark Mayle (Malvern '18) 6'8

10. Naz Bohanon

Lorain, Class of 2017

Naz Bohanon has never been known as one of the top leapers in the area, but it's 2016 and the 6'4 competitor has found a way to sneak into our top 10.  Bohanon uses this reputation as a way to bait defenders into challenging at the rim.

9. Marlon Moore

Benedictine, Class of 2017

Marlon Moore has been making big-time plays since he first stepped on to the NEO scene. The 6'5 forward has a great frame combined with explosive leaping ability. Moore will see his responsibilities increase this upcoming season as he will find the ball in his hands more than he is accustomed to.

8. Gwarren Douglas

Shaw, Class of 2017

When you combine height, length, and raw athleticism, the result is Gwarren Douglas, or otherwise known by his teammates and coaches as Treetop.  Douglas is one of the bounciest forwards in the area and once a shot goes up, it is in your best interest to find Douglas and put a body on him.

7. Christian Guess

Shaker Heights, Class of 2018

After throwing down the top dunk of last season, it should come to the surprise of no one that Christian Guess cracks the top 10 of our list. Guess is an explosive wing who has all of the tools to be successful at the next level. Expect him to add a few more clips to his highlight reel this season as he will be playing with a guard-heavy Shaker Heights squad.

6. Antonio McQueen

Warren JFK, Class of 2017

Antonio McQueen, a native of Warren, Ohio, may be the least known athlete on this list, but that does not take away anything from what the 6'6 athlete is capable of doing once his feet leave the floor. McQueen makes an effort to put the ball and his defender through the rim any chance he gets.

5. Allen Simms

Mentor, Class of 2017

To some, Allen Simms may be a bit too high on this list, but anyone who has seen him throughout the summer can testify to what the 6'5 wing is capable of.  Simms, who has more than a handful of big-time dunks under his belt, is entering his second season at Mentor under Coach Krizancic and he brings a much needed intensity and aggressiveness to a Cardinal squad that will once again compete as one of the area's best.

4. Logan Hill

Jackson, Class of 2017

No one is safe underneath the bucket when Logan Hill is on the floor. Hill has a knack of being in the right place at the right time and putting back missed shots with thuderous two-hand dunks. His athleticism and never ending motor are just two of the reasons why Coach Kowalczyk and the University of Toledo coaching staff made Hill a priority.

3. Derek Culver

Warren Harding, Class of 17

Derek Culver is undoubtedly the highest regarded recruit in the area. Culver has fluidity and coordination that most players at his position just don't have, and at 6'8, his ability to handle the rock and attack off either one leg or two-feet is one of the many reasons why he isn't someone you want to meet at the rim. He is currently fielding interest from Arizona, Florida, Indiana, West Virginia, Kansas, and others.

2. Jayvon Graves

St. Vincent-St. Mary, Class of 2017

With his King James teammate, Markell Johnson, opting to forgo a year of prep school and enroll at NC State, Jayvon Graves is the top returning athlete we have at either guard spot in the area. So far this summer, Graves has been looking much better creating for himself off the dribble and that is bad news for defenders. The 6'2 combo guard is the state's top scoring guard, and after a strong finish to the 2016 regular season, Graves will look to be aggressive out of the gate this coming season.

1. Kyle Young

Jackson, Class of 2017

Both Massillon Jackson and the King James AAU programs are well-represented on this list. What both of those teams have in common is that they both feature 6'7 forward Kyle Young, one of two NEO players to be a part of the ESPN 100. Culver, the other player listed on the ESPN list, fell victim to Young's athleticism after Culver attempted to block a Young slam in last season's matchup against Warren Harding. While he may not be the flashiest dunker, you would be hard pressed to find someone who has caught more bodies than Young over the last two seasons.
