Weekend Games Cause A Shake Up In New Top 25

Massillon Jackson holds on to number one while teams two through nine continue to play their game of musical chairs. With Hoover, Lake, and an upcoming game at Flyin' to the Hoop, the Polar Bears face perhaps their toughest stretch of the season thus far as each one of those three opponents offers their own individual challenges.

While Jackson did not participate in Sunday's Play by Play Classic, there were a number of top 25 teams who did. You can see the results from those games below as well as our latest poll!

  • This Week: 1/10 @ #6 Hoover, 1/13 @ #17 Uniontown Lake, 1/15 vs. Our Savior New American (Flyin' to the Hoop)
  • Outlook: A tough stretch lies ahead for the top ranked Polar Bears as they face two league rivals before heading down to Dayton to play a Our Savior New American team that features two juniors committed to Division 1 programs. 
2. Cleveland Heights (3)
  • Record: 7-2
  • Last Week: Defeated Shaw, 54-51. Defeated Warren Harding, 69-64.
  • This Week: 1/13 @ Maple Heights. 1/15 vs. Centerville (Flyin' to the Hoop)
  • Outlook: They weren't pretty but Heights was able to grind out a pair of wins against two scrappy teams. On Tuesday, the Tigers travel to Maple as they play a Mustangs team looking to bounce back from their 20-point loss against Lorain.
3. St. Ignatius (6)
  • Record: 7-3
  • Last Week: Defeated GlenOak, 68-46. Defeated University, 90-54.
  • This Week: 1/13 vs. #5 St. Edward, 1/14 @ #6 North Canton Hoover (Mercy Medical Classic)
  • Outlook: Friday marks the first of a potential three contests between Ignatius and Ed's. A packed house is set to be on hand and like always, emotions will be running high. The Wildcats won't have much of a turnaround before heading to North Canton to play Hoover in the night cap of the Mercy Medical Classic.
4. St. Vincent-St. Mary (7)
  • Record: 6-3
  • Last Week: Defeated #5 St. Edward, 69-67. Defeated Euclid, 84-58.
  • This Week: 1/14 @ Trotwood Madison. 1/15 vs. Pickerington North (Flyin' to the Hoop) 
  • Outlook: A monster third quarter propelled the Fighting Irish over the then number two ranked team, St. Edward. Coach Dru Joyce and company gear up for a weekend trip to Dayton with two big-time non-local matchups.
5. St. Edward (2)
  • Record: 8-2
  • Last Week: Lost to #4 St. Vincent-St. Mary, 69-67. Defeated #11 Benedictine, 79-68. Defeated Brunswick, 52-41. 
  • This Week: 1/13 @ #3 St. Ignatius
  • Outlook: St. Edward will have four days off to stretch out and ice up after playing three games in just as many days. With Friday's rivalry game lurking in the shadows, the  Eagles follow up the Ignatius game with Lorain, Toledo St. John, and Villa Angela-St. Joseph next week.
6. North Canton Hoover (8)
  • Record: 7-1
  • Last Week: Defeated #9 McKinley, 81-68.
  • This Week: 1/10 vs. #1 Massillon Jackson, 1/13 @ Green, 1/14 vs. #3 St. Ignatius (Mercy Medical Classic)
  • Outlook: The Federal League gauntlet continues for the Vikings with the Polar Bears of Massillon Jackson coming into town to visit the Vikings on their home floor. Since losing to Lake back on 12/13, Hoover has appeared to really turn a corner this season. 
7. Lorain (9)
  • Record: 7-1
  • Last Week: Defeated #8 Garfield Heights, 66-64. Defeated #19 Maple Heights, 85-65.
  • This Week: 1/13 @ Warrensville Heights
  • Outlook: The Titans are rolling. Defeating two top 25 teams last week, Lorain has been led by seniors Naz Bohanon and Jalil Little but the contributions from Octavius Wilson and Devon Grant have been key early on. 
8. Garfield Heights (4)
  • Record: 9-2
  • Last Week: Lost to #7 Lorain, 66-64. Defeated Revere, 80-55. 
  • This Week: 1/10 @ Akron Garfield, 1/15 vs. Upper Arlington (Flyin' to the Hoop)
  • Outlook: One of the more anticipated matchups of the upcoming weekend features Garfield Heights taking on Columbus' own Upper Arlington and Ohio State commit Dane Goodwin.
9. Canton McKinley (5)
  • Record: 8-2
  • Last Week: Lost to #7 North Canton Hoover, 81-68. Defeated #24 Lutheran East, 68-66. 
  • This Week: 1/10 vs. #17 Uniontown Lake, 1/13 vs. GlenOak, 1/15 vs. Solon (Mercy Medical Classic) 
  • Outlook: Deontae McCollum earned Game MVP Honors after his 17-point outing against Lutheran East at the Cleveland Scholaastic PBP Classic. McCollum, as well as senior Isaiah Smith, have been much needed complements for Darryl Straughter.
10. Medina (11)
  • Record: 10-0
  • Last Week: Defeated Brunswick, 66-62. Defeated Shaker Heights, 92-79.
  • This Week: 1/10 vs. #23 Elyria, 1/13 @ # 15 Mentor
  • Outlook: Coach Hassinger and the Bees are undefeated and off to a hot start shooting the basketball. If the team can consistently get stops on the other end, Medina has a chance to jump a few spots by time next Monday rolls around.
11. Benedictine (10)
  • Record: 7-2
  • Last Week: Defeated Padua, 55-43. Lost to #5 St. Edward, 79-68.
  • This Week: 1/13 vs. NDCL, 1/16 vs. Toledo Scott (Toledo Classic)
  • Outlook: Turnovers ended up being the difference in Bene's loss against St. Edward as they fell to St. Edward at home. Seniors Jamari Patterson and Ronnie James have provided some leadership for young and talented group of guards.
12. Cornerstone Christian (14)
  • Record: 8-3
  • Last Week: Defeated University, 97-68 .
  • This Week: 1/10 @ Bedford, 1/14 vs. Garaway
  • Outlook: The brute end of the Patriots' non-league schedule is behind them and the team will have some time to acclimate junior transfer Martell Terrell into the varsity rotation. 
13. Hoban (15)
  • Record: 8-1
  • Last Week: Defeated Akron Firestone, 70-52. Defeated Walsh Jesuit, 59-26.
  • This Week: 1/10 @ Gilmour Academy, 1/13 vs. Lake Catholic
  • Outlook: Hoban dropped their first game of the season down in Columbus against St. Charles but have since won 8 straight. Collen Gurley has emerged as one of the area's top junior guards.
14. VASJ (13)
  • Record: 4-3
  • Last Week: Lost to La Lumiere (IN) , 85-44.
  • This Week: 1/13-1/14 @ Burger King Classic (PA)
  • Outlook: A flat third quarter by VASJ quickly spiraled into a downhill game against the nation's number one team in La Lumiere but the experience will pay its dividends come March as the Vikings seek a fifth consecutive Final Four appearance. 
15. Mentor (12)
  • Record: 6-1
  • Last Week: Defeated Solon, 77-70. Lost to #23 Elyria, 74-69.
  • This Week: 1/10 @ Shaker Heights, 1/13 vs. #10 Medina
  • Outlook: The Cardinals suffered their first defeat of the season Friday night at the hands of Elyria and have to turn around and play two quality GCC foes next week. 
16. Holy Name (19)
  • Record: 9-1
  • Last Week: Defeated Trinity, 73-49. Defeated Parma, 103-63. Defeated Brush, 79-57. 
  • This Week: 1/10 @ Valley Forge, 1/13 vs. Normandy, 1/15 vs. Mars, PA (Mercy Medical Classic)
  • Outlook: The Green Wave bump a few spots after a dominant showing Sunday against Brush at the Play by Play Classic. Dwayne Cohill faces AAU teammate and close friend Robby Carmody at the Mercy Medical Classic. Both are ranked among the nation's best.
17. Uniontown Lake (18)
  • Record: 8-2
  • Last Week: Defeated Canton Central Catholic, 54-43. Defeated Massillon Perry, 66-45.
  • This Week: 1/10 @ #9 McKinley, 1/13 vs. #1 Jackson
  • Outlook: Blue Streaks have as tough of a week ahead as anyone in the area. Coach McBride and company looking to keep themselves at the top of the league standings.
18. Akron Ellet (20)
  • Record: 8-1
  • Last Week: Defeated Firestone, 63-50.
  • This Week: 1/10 vs. Akron North, 1/13 vs. Akron Buchtel
  • Outlook: Ellet is undefeated in the City Series but they host a scrappy Buchtel squad coming up that wants to redeem themselves from their first matchup.
19. Maple Heights (17)
  • Record: 7-2
  • Last Week: Lost to #7 Lorain, 85-65.
  • This Week: 1/10 @ Cardinal Mooney, 1/13 vs. #2 Cleveland Heights
  • Outlook: Friday's LEL matchup with Cleveland Height is a must see for this week. Juniors Alfonse Hale and Yahel Hill have been special so far this season.
20. Cleveland Central Catholic (16)
  • Record: 5-4
  • Last Week: Defeated Warren JFK, 86-40. Lost to Shaker Heights, 75-68.
  • This Week: 1/10 @ Warrensville Heights, 1/13 @ Trinity
  • Outlook: After winning five straight, CCC lost their first game since returning their varsity  group. 
21. Brecksville (21)
  • Record: 7-1
  • Last Week: Defeated North Royalton, 65-46. Defeated Wadsworth, 47-42. 
  • This Week: 1/13 @ Stow, 1/14 @ Padua
  • Outlook: After an embarrassing loss to Garfield Heights over the holidays, Brecksville responded with two quality wins in the Suburban League - National Division. 
22. Copley (22)
  • Record: 8-0
  • Last Week: Defeated Highland, 74-52. Defeated Aurora, 90-44.
  • This Week: 1/10 @ Nordonia, 1/13 @ Kent Roosevelt
  • Outlook: Copley won both of their games last week by more than 20 points to remain one of just three unbeatens in our poll. 
23. Elyria (NR)
  • Record: 7-2
  • Last Week: Defeated #15 Mentor, 74-69.
  • This Week: 1/10 @ #10 Medina, 1/13 vs. Solon
  • Outlook: Coach Larrick and company picked up their first signature win of the season against Mentor last Friday behind a 28-point game from Antonio Blanton.
24. Lutheran East (23)
  • Record: 6-4
  • Last Week: Defeated Collinwood, 83-76. Defeated Lutheran West, 68-49. Lost vs. #9 McKinley, 68-66.
  • This Week: 1/11 vs. John Marshall, 1/13 vs. Western Reserve Academy
  • Outlook:  Sunday's game against Canton McKinley was decided by just a handful of possessions as the Falcons were leading throughout the entire first half. While it was the last matchup added to the event, it turned out to be arguably the best played game of the day. Lutheran East has two opportunites to bounce back this week after a relatively quiet Holiday break.
25. Wooster (NR)
  • Record: 10-0
  • Last Week: Defeated Clearfork, 71-50. Defeated Elida, 69-67,
  • This Week: 1/13 @ Ashland
  • Outlook: The Generals feature a trio of scorers led by seniors Peyton Bennington and Trever Smith and they look to speed you up and bait you into playing their brand of basketball.
